Training your dog to come towards you on your command is very important. It gives you an upper hand while handling your dog. It also tells you about the influence that you seem to have on your dog. It might be difficult for you to catch the attention of your dog when he has so many distractions around him. In that case only a command that is overly conditioned with the dog is supposed to work with him. You need to concentrate hard and practice by applying some effective steps in order to make your dog come towards you whenever you call him.
Why Your Dog Does Not Follow Your Command?
At times dogs do not follow your command when you say “come” or they might not come to you at that very instant. This can be really frustrating for some dog owners at times. There can be multiple reasons for which your dog might not follow your commands:
One of the most famous reasons is that your dog might be aware of the fact that by coming to you he would not be able to play any more so he decides not to come.
Other reason can be a fact that your dog can be anxious of certain situation that might make him hesitant to come to you.
Another reason can include not having proper reinforcement for following the “come” command. If the dog was not properly reinforced in the past, he might not attend to this command every time you utter it.
When a dog doesn’t see his owner as the dominant one or as the leader he might tend to refuse the various commands that are uttered by his owner. Thus if your dog has dominance issues with you, he might not follow your command at all!
There are many steps and tricks through which you can make sure that your dog comes towards you every time you command him to come.
Positive reinforcement is the key to success for strengthening every kind of desirable behavior. You must identify the reinforcing element that suits best for your dog. You can identify your dog’s reinforcing element by looking at his daily routine. Some dogs love their toys whereas others love a snack. There may be dogs that might love to be patted on the back and head. After identifying the reinforcing element, you must make sure to deliver it every time your dog indulges in desirable behavior. This leads to strengthening of the desirable behavior. If your dog receives his favorite thing after every time he bids you then he will learn to do it all the time.
Eventually you can decrease the delivery of the element that you were using for reinforcement when you see that he has learned the behavior. However make sure that you do not eliminate the delivery of such factor all of the sudden. This might give rise to undesirable behaviors like ignoring your commands.
Reaching Out When the Dog Comes to You
The dog must come to you on every command. However you need to give him the lesson of keeping with you after coming so that he doesn’t hovers around you. Make sure that you touch the collar or pat your dog every time he comes towards you. This will give the dog a sense of being near the owner whenever he is called on a command. You can pair up the “come” command with “Sit” command as well. In this case the reinforcing factor will work to strengthen both these commands.
Practicing at Different Places
You must try to generalize the commands that you give to your dog as well. If you will not practice the command of “come” outside house, or at new places, your dog might not listen to you when you make him walk out. This can be done through graded practices or the technique of shaping. In this technique you tend to achieve smaller goals by reinforcing your dog in order to reach the bigger goal. For example you can train your dog to come to you in your house in the start. After that you can practice this command in your yard. Later on you can practice this command in a wider area like a park with loads of distractions. If your dog will be reinforced correctly in the first two places then he will be able to follow your command in the most distraction filled places as well. The key to success in generalization of this command is to practice in different places and training eventually for larger areas.
Keep on Practicing at Home
Your dog must remember to be called and then to come towards you whenever you want him to. So you must call him randomly at home as well. In this case the dog will never forget to follow you and will come to you any time. Also keep on reinforcing him with his favorite treat to ensure great results!
Keep Calm and Observe Your Dog’s Body Language
You must keep your voice tone firm yet calm while calling your dog. It won’t do any good to you if you will call your dog in a harsh or angry tone. This will upset the dog and might eventually put him on the defensive mode. Thus try calling him in a relaxed manner. Also look for different cues regarding his body language when calling him. He might not come towards you if he is anxious, upset or fearful. It is better to ignore your dog in this case, instead of chanting your lungs away in order to call him.
Thus dog training is pretty hasty at times but it can be a real fun if you try and do it properly. Dog training at home needs loads of patience and skill on the owner’s part to teach your dog in the most beneficial way. You might have to work a little harder but it is worth in the end. You will feel proud of yourself on successfully teaching your dog all the skills that you wanted him to have.
